“New Data Shows Largest Number of People in Poverty on Record.” I couldn’t stop scrolling through the gut-wrenching graphs and pictures in the New York Times, each painting a more horrifying picture than the last. My sorrow and pity were matched only by my desire to help. But as a young adolescent, I lacked the knowledge and wherewithal to do so.
